Carbon Scraper Ring

Carbon Scraper Rings are cylindrical parts mounted on the upper portion of the in-engine Cylinder Liner (piston top land dead position), and are functional parts mainly mounted on diesel engines.
They are also called protection rings, fire rings and anti-polishing rings.

Carbon Scraper Ring

Characteristics

  • Scrapes off hard card carbon that has adhered to the piston top land
  • Prevents liner inner wall friction, and stabilizes the low position of lubricating oil consumption
  • Using the same material as the Cylinder Liner assures same heat expansion

No carbon scraper

Hard carbon accumulated on the side of the piston/Piston/Piston ring/Cylinder Liner

Characteristics

The hard carbon accumulated on the piston contacts the inner circumference of the liner when the piston goes up and down, causing partial eccentric friction on the liner inner circumference (increase in lubricating oil consumption).

Carbon Scraper Ring

Characteristics

  • The hard carbon accumulated on the piston is scraped off by the scraper ring when the piston goes up.
  • The scraper ring is smaller than the inner circumference of the liner, so the hard carbon does not grow beyond the scraper ring diameter, and makes no contact with the liner inner circumference.
